Introduction to Dave’s book
One month before the first edition of the book Dave Lieber’s Watchdog Nation: Bite Back When Businesses and Scammers Do You Wrong was released, our nation suffered a catastrophic financial collapse that became known as the Great Recession. The book could not have been more timely.
For decades, the so-called experts and government leaders promised us that the “fundamentals” of the U.S. economy were sound. They promised us they were taking care of us, that everything would be all right.
We now know better.
Americans everywhere began to understand the great lesson of this era: The only one who can protect you, your family and your business is YOU. You must be your own watchdog in all matters of your life.
At my newspaper job, I get more mail than anyone. Each letter is a complaint about a company or individual that the letter writer does business with. Each contains a sad story of betrayal and loss. It breaks my heart that I can’t help everyone.
This book is designed to show you how to help yourself.

Just like you, I was brought up to believe the world was a good place. But now we understand that institutions such as our banks, credit card companies, utilities, service repair industries, you name it, often don’t have our best interests at heart. Sometimes their behavior toward us is nothing short of criminal.
For every Bernard Madoff and R. Allen Stanford who allegedly swindle big, there are thousands of others who try to scam us in small ways, too.
In the year that passed since Watchdog Nation and its sister Web site WatchdogNation.com were introduced to the world, I was a near-victim of another eight attempted scams. (Yes, I keep count because for me, these are learning opportunities.)
Let me share:
- A neighbor knocked on my door to explain that she had switched electric companies to TXU Energy. After offering her my condolences, (I pay a lower rate), she explained that they had transposed our addresses. TXU was switching me, not her. I had to call and cancel. If I hadn’t been told, my electric bill would have jumped 30 percent.
- Someone walked into a Wal-Mart and wrote a fraudulent $279 check. The check contained my correct name and address, but it wasn’t mine. I learned about this when a debt collection agency called seeking payment.
- Someone tried to use my publishing company’s post office box to apply for a new credit card.
- A bank notified me that my financial records were stolen – known as a data breach. Unknown people could gain access to my financial information.
- I revisited a company’s Internet site where years before I purchased a check endorsement stamp. This time, however, the company took the money, but didn’t send me the stamp.
- Another Internet retailer took my money for a promotional item I bought for Watchdog Nation and tried to avoid delivery.
- Five years of my credit history vanished from my credit report. This meant I could not successfully apply for any new credit cards until my history was restored.
- While researching a software purchase, a salesman assured me that customer service would assist me with any installation problems. When I tried to install and ran into a problem, customer service tried to charge me $79.
If this happens to me, I know it happens to you.
